Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th April 1972. The family of Jill Scott consisted of her mother and grandmother. She is an only-child. Scott went to The Philadelphia High School for Girls After graduating, she enrolled in Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education as well as working two job. She planned to become the high school's English teacher. She had a dream of becoming an English teacher at high school was cut short after she dropped out of school. A poet by trade started performing, she was able to perform at live poetry recitals. She later teamed together with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form a group. You Got Me was co-written by the two. At a Roots concert, she came out as an artist. After that, she was able to get collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was also able to gain knowledge of the stage when she was a part of the Canada tour of the Broadway show Rent. She signed as the label's first artist.
